Hinge Health program information
What is Hinge Health?
Hinge Health is pioneering the world’s most patient-centered Digital MSK Clinic to help people manage their back and joint pain and get back to the things they love. The program is accessible anytime, anywhere, and designed for everybody and every body part. We provide education, personalized stretching and strengthening exercises and, where needed, clinical support to help make lasting change. Hinge Health is available to employees with primary insurance coverage under a participating company’s health plan. Some of our partners also offer Hinge Health to domestic partners, dependents (at least 18 years of age), and retirees utilizing the employer-sponsored health plan.
How does the program work?
Based on your answers to the 10-minute online application, we will place you in a program that best suits your needs. Once enrolled in any of our programs, you will be provided with a customized treatment plan that will include three pillars of effective care; education, exercise therapy, and support to build healthy habits.
Do I need a referral from my doctor to participate in a Hinge Health program?
In most cases, a referral is not required. However, some states do require a healthcare provider’s referral, a prescription, or a signed disclosure form prior to meeting with a Hinge Health physical therapist. We’ll reach out to you with more information if this requirement applies to you.
What is included with Hinge Health?
Hinge Health has implemented three pillars of effective care; education, exercise therapy, and behavioral health support and digitized them to provide easy access to a curated program that delivers lasting results and long-term, sustainable behavior change. All Hinge Health programs include unlimited access to the exercise therapy programs and educational articles contained in the digital app. Depending upon which program is most suitable for an individual, a participant may also receive the following:
-Health coaching delivered through live phone calls, SMS, email, and the Hinge Health app -1:1 video sessions with a dedicated Physical Therapist -Kit equipment which may include sensors, chargers, exercise bands, and a yoga mat
What is the daily playlist?
The daily playlist is the set of activities that we encourage you to complete when you sign in to your Hinge Health app. Your playlist weaves together all the elements of the Hinge Health program that help you achieve better back and joint health: personalized exercise therapy, behavioral support, and accessible educational content that you can apply in your everyday life.
What kind of results can I expect?
On average, our participants reduce their pain by more than 60%. In addition, 90% of Hinge Health participants say they’re now less likely to pursue surgery as an option for pain relief than before. View Resources
What is the cost of Hinge Health?
Our programs are made available through partnerships with employers who agree to cover the full cost of the program. There is no out-of-pocket cost for those who qualify to participate.
What is the science behind the program?
Virtually all major medical bodies, including the CDC and American Orthopedic Association, recommend exhausting all non-surgical treatments for chronic pain before considering surgery, as many studies have shown that these can dramatically reduce pain. Our program packages these treatments together, and our results often surpass previous studies.
Hinge Health’s 3-year study included over 10,000 participants. The study is published in JMIR. The study demonstrates that each Hinge Health remote exercise therapy and coaching session has a direct correlation to pain reduction. Each participant had an average pain reduction of 69%, reduced depression and anxiety 58%, increased prodcutivity 61%, and decreased surgery likelihood 67%.
What is the weekly commitment for this program?
For the best results, we encourage you to complete a 15-minute playlist at least three days each week.
Can I work on multiple joints or programs at the same time?
It’s clinically best to treat one part of your body at a time. When completing your application, please select the area or joint that you’d like to work on first. If you have pain in more than one area, we recommend selecting the area or joint that limits your daily life the most. After finding pain relief in your first program, you may apply to a different program to receive care for another area or joint.
What is the role of the Health Coach in this program?
Our Health Coaches are all qualified professionals passionate about helping people achieve their wellness goals. Depending upon which program is most suitable for you, you may be paired with a personal Health Coach. If you’re paired with one of our coaches, you can expect to receive expert support as you build healthy habits, manage persistent pain, engage with your exercise therapy, and achieve wellness goals. As a co-pilot on your journey, your coach will help you overcome obstacles, build consistency in your program, and celebrate all your successes.
Your Health Coach will communicate with you primarily through text messages, phone calls, and emails as needed. You can always let your coach know if you would like more, less, or a different type of communication. We encourage you to keep an open dialogue with your coach so that you can receive the type of support you want.
Can I speak with a Health Coach in a language other than English? ¿Puedo hablar con un entrenador de salud en un idioma que no sea el inglés?
Yes! We currently offer Spanish language services. If you’d like to be matched with a Spanish speaking Health Coach, please email help@hingehealth.com or call (855) 902-2777.
¡Si! Actualmente ofrecemos servicios en español. Si quiere que lo emparejen con un entrenador de salud que habla español, por favor envíe un correo electrónico a hola@hingehealth.com o llame al (855) 902-2777.
What equipment do I need to participate?
Hinge Health is a digital program, and the most important piece of equipment you’ll need is our app. The Hinge Health app is available for download in the App Store and the Google Play Store. Depending upon which program suits you best, you may also receive a Hinge Health kit containing additional equipment.
Do I need internet access to participate?
WiFi connection or use of cellular data is required to varying degrees depending upon the program. Regardless of your program enrollment, internet access is required for the following:
- App login: Signing in to the app requires a WiFi connection or the use of cellular data. If you have limited WiFi access, we recommend staying signed in to the app between sessions
- Progress tracking: Periodic data syncs allow your Care Team to view your activity and track your progress. Many of our participants without WiFi at home complete their data syncs every 1-2 weeks at work, a friend or relative’s house, or a library or community cente
- App updates: We occasionally release updates to the Hinge Health app that add new features and/or improve app performance.
- Video visits: Depending upon your program, you may meet with your assigned Physical Therapist for a video visit. This video visit requires a WiFi connection or the use of cellular data.
What is the function of the sensors within the program?
Hinge Health sensors provide real-time movement feedback during the exercise therapy session, helping you maintain proper form and get the most out of your exercises. The sensors monitor and measure your body position in 3 different axes but do not track your location, collect health information, or provide movement feedback outside of the app.
You can complete playlists with or without your sensors. Whether or not you use your sensors, you’ll complete all the same exercises and earn the same points toward unlocking the next program level.

Do I need to wait until I’m finished with in-person PT before I start my Hinge Health program?
If you’re interested, we encourage you to complete an application to determine if Hinge Health is right for you. Our digital programs can be completed on-the-go or from the comfort of your own home using our app. Your exercise therapy program will help you combat your musculoskeletal pain by building strength with exercises that mimic common movement patterns such as bending down to tie your shoes or going up stairs. These exercises are programmed by our clinicians to help you feel stronger performing your day-to-day activities and get back to doing the things you love.
Can I work on multiple joints or programs at the same time?
It’s clinically best to treat one part of your body at a time. When completing your application, please select the area or joint that you’d like to work on first. If you have pain in more than one area, we recommend selecting the area or joint that limits your daily life the most. I selected “Upper Back” but the application only mentioned “Neck.”
Our Neck / Upper Back program is designed for anyone with pain or stiffness in their neck, upper back, or both areas at the same time. We have built one program to address both of these areas of the body because the exercises that help the neck also help the upper back, and vice versa. For simplicity, throughout the questionnaire and program, we will refer to your neck. Please be assured that everything in this program applies to your upper back as well.
I’m not currently employed. How do I answer questions about hours of work that I missed due to pain?
We encourage you to think about the hours of daily activities that you might have missed instead of the hours of work. You can respond as if we asked, “How many hours did you miss from desired daily activities due to your pain?”
Why is the application page blank? Why am I not able to progress to the next page?
We apologize for the frustration and recommend completing the online application using Google Chrome or Firefox on a desktop or laptop computer. Please be sure to answer every question, eliminate leading or trailing spaces in the name field, and adjust all slider bards from their original positions. If you are still experiencing issues and would like one-on-one assistance, please contact the Support Team.

How do I connect and use my sensors during my exercise therapy session?
Hinge Health sensors provide real-time movement feedback during the exercise therapy session, helping you maintain proper form and get the most out of your exercises. After beginning a playlist, the app will guide you through powering on, positioning, and setting up your sensors. After completing the set-up process, follow the on-screen guidance and move your body to bring the motion bar on your screen into the exercise target zone. Once you’ve reached the correct position, the exercise target zone will turn green and an exercise countdown timer will begin. Hold your position until the timer expires and the app guides you to complete the next exercise.
Do I have to use the sensors?
You can complete playlists with or without your sensors. Whether or not you use your sensors, you’ll complete all the same exercises and earn the same points toward unlocking the next program level.
My sensors don’t seem to be working correctly.
If you are experiencing some challenges with your sensors, please review the troubleshooting tips below:
Check sensor battery A low battery charge may impact sensor performance and make it difficult to use your sensors to complete your exercises. Check the battery on your sensors by plugging them into the charging equipment. If your sensors blink or flash when you plug them in, leave them to charge until they display a steady white light indicating they are fully charged. Enable bluetooth Sensor connection may fail due to your device settings. You may need to enable Bluetooth and location permissions on your device before connecting your sensors through the Hinge Health app. Reset your sensors Unpairing and re-pairing your sensors within the app acts as a reset for your sensors. Exit your exercise therapy session and tap ‘Account’ in the lower right corner of the screen. Select ‘Unpair sensors’ and confirm your selection when prompted. Begin a new exercise therapy with ‘Exercise with sensors’ toggled on and follow the stops to reconnect your sensors to the app.
Check sensor positioning The Hinge Health app detects your body position using the position of your sensors. Confirm you’re wearing your sensors as shown in the app to ensure your movements are tracked accurately. Fasten sensor straps snugly over form-fitting clothing or your bare skin to prevent your sensors from shifting out of position as you complete your exercises.
Check for available app updates Check for available app updates by opening the ‘Account’ tab in the lower right corner of the Hinge Health app and scrolling down to ‘App version.’ If you see ‘Update available’ next to your listed app version, set aside a few minutes before your next session to install the latest version of the app and take advantage of all the latest features and improvements.
For additional assistance, please contact the Support Team.
